Our special place is located directly behind Kendall hall, which is the oldest building on campus. It is surrounded with trees, buildings and grass. It is a square box full of gold dusted path ways to explore hundreds of roses. This is the beloved rose garden at Chico State and our special place.
Upon entering the rose garden, one feels transported somewhere magical such The Secret Garden, written by Francis Burnett in 1910. A sense of calm brought silence to our conversation as we strolled along the winding walk ways. There were many different colored roses each symbolizing different emotions and feelings. Red roses mean love and romance and are used to say I love you. Pink roses are a symbol of grace and elegance which are used to express admiration. Yellow roses invoke feelings of warmth and happiness which symbolize true friendship. White roses are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings and represent honor and purity. Orange roses express desire and enthusiasm towards a reverent romance. Finally, lavender roses capture the feelings of enchantment and express feelings of love at first sight. Because of memory attachment, each of us were drawn to different colored roses in the garden.

Merriam Webster defines a garden as an area of ground where plants such as flowers or vegetables are grown. We define a garden as an escape from the daily grind into a tranquil haven filled with our own relaxing thoughts. From the book, Language and the Making of Place: Narrative-Descriptive Approach by Yi-Fu Tuan, speech is a component of the total force that transforms nature into a human place. Tuan, Y. (1999). Language and the making of place (p.685). Tuan explains this furthermore with the example, “There is a moral dimension to speech as there is to physical action. This warm conversation between friends can make the place itself seem warm; by contrast, malicious speech has the power to destroy a places reputation and thereby its visibility.” We found this to be true from personal experience in the rose garden. The place itself created a stress free environment which allowed us to forget our busy day while we enjoyed the sweet aroma of the roses which created pleasant conversations. The rose garden is now a place associated with pleasant conversation.
In comparison to the story, The One Breasted Women, place attachment is not about beauty but the countless memories associated with the place. This makes an important point that memories are associated with how we felt in the past and how we feel in the present. The rose garden makes us recognize current thoughts and feelings just as the Joshua trees did for the women in the story.
Our special place makes each of us remember different moments that have happened throughout our lives and allow us look forward to the bright futures we all have. The stimulating smells and feelings from the roses are what makes our special place so memorable. Though the flowers are simple, they are a part of so many places and memories in our lives that the flower becomes more than just a stem with thorns and soft petals that blossom over time into something more. Place attachment is what makes the secret garden special.
